In STAR WARS: Galactic Racer™, Shade is the human player character in the singleplayer campaign: a cargo pilot turned racer pursuing revenge and glory. Shade grew up on Gathleon under the oppressive Bool family and joins the Galactic League to take down its reigning champion, Kestar Bool. Hibi, Shade's mechanic and loyal friend, helps turn that personal grudge into a racing campaign.
Where did Shade come from?
Shade grew up on Gathleon, a purple quartz planet whose residents, drawn from different species, are collectively called the Gathii. Shade dreamed of becoming a racing legend, but hardship and scarce resources during the Empire's rule kept that ambition out of reach.
Exceptional vehicle-handling skills instead led Shade into professional cargo flying, carrying dangerous goods through hazardous environments on planets and in space. That work brought Shade into contact with Darius Pax. Shade and Hibi also transported cargo of varying legality across the galaxy.
Why does Shade want revenge on Kestar Bool?

The Bool family controlled Gathleon's valuable mines and tightened its rule over the population. Shade regularly joined protests against the family's work towns and strict regime.
During one protest, Shade collided with Kestar Bool's speeder. Kestar had Shade imprisoned in an Imperial jail, where Shade remained until the New Republic emptied the Imperial cells. Their rivalry therefore began long before the Galactic League: Kestar was already responsible for Shade's imprisonment.
After the Empire fell, Shade returned to cargo flying and met the young Ardennian mechanic Hibi. By then, Kestar had become Galactic League champion, using the competition to advance the Bool family's interests while seeking control of the League itself.
Why does Shade wear a helmet?
Shade's helmet has a medical purpose. Shade received it in prison to treat injuries sustained in the collision with Kestar's speeder.
The helmet is part of Shade's backstory, rather than merely a mysterious appearance. The specific injury diagnosis is not confirmed yet.
How does Shade join the Galactic League?

Darius Pax, the League's founder, recruits Shade to challenge Kestar and preserve control of his racing league. For Shade, the invitation offers both a fresh start and a chance to settle the score.
The opening follows Shade doing delivery work and initially resisting Pax's offer. Pax proposes a friendly exhibition race, and Hibi encourages Shade to try it. Shade agrees to one race before taking on the larger goal of defeating Kestar.
Hibi remains Shade's main companion, ally, and mechanic. Her paddock workshop supplies parts and upgrades to prepare Shade's vehicle for competition. Kestar is Shade's principal rival both on and off the track; the broader cast is covered in STAR WARS: Galactic Racer™ characters.
Can you customize Shade's identity?

The campaign customization shown in pre-release gameplay includes outfits, helmets, male or female appearance, and voice selection. These options let players choose Shade's presentation; they do not establish a fixed canonical gender or a different backstory.
Shade's legal name beyond “Shade,” fixed age, and fixed gender are not confirmed yet. The complete campaign ending and every story twist are also not confirmed yet in the available material as of October 7, 2026.
